Making Them Great for LA '28: Exciting Updates!
The Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a generous $135,000 grant from the Names Family Foundation for our
"Making Them Great for LA '28" initiative! This incredible support will allow us to expand our programs, enhance youth participation in the Olympic sport of sprint canoe and kayak, and foster the development of para-athletes in our community.
With this funding, we are able to provide specialized equipment, training opportunities, and educational programs to inspire the next generation of athletes in Pierce County. Our aim is to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and mental resilience through paddling sports, while also creating an inclusive environment where youth and para-athletes can thrive - and strive for the highest level of competition, the Olympic Games!
Key activities supported by the grant include:
- Equipment Acquisition including a tow vehicle for our boat trailers, a timing system, tech for coaches, new training boats, new ergs (training machines for land training) and more
- Specialized Training Camps for athletes committed to training for the LA 2028 Olympic Games
- Para-Athlete Program Development, including plans for adaptive equipment and coaching to bring back GHCKRT's para program
We are deeply grateful to the Names Family Foundation for their dedication to uplifting young athletes and fostering a love of water sports in our region. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming events, milestones, and ways you can get involved in this exciting journey toward LA '28!
Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier, and more connected community through paddling. 🛶
